Cyc: Meares goes for second gold
ATHENS, Aug 24 AAP - Australia's Anna Meares will ride for the Olympic bronze medal
of the track cycling women's sprint after losing her semi-final today.
Meares won the first of the three race semi-final against Canadian Lori-Ann Meunzer
but was outsmarted in the other two to lose 2-1.
The 500m time trial gold medallist was watchful in her first race against Muenzer before
taking the lead at the bell and holding the Canadian off in the sprint home.
But in the second, Muenzer started on the high side of the track and took Meares by
surprise with an inside move with a lap to go to force the decider in which she stayed
in front and easily beat the Australian.
Meares will ride against Svetlana Grankovskaya for the bronze in a rematch of this
year's world championship final which the Russian won.
Muenzer will race another Russian, Tamilla Abassova, for the gold.
