Fed: Costello says politician super restrained by private sects

Federal Treasurer PETER COSTELLO has defended the generous politician superannuation scheme.

He says it's quite restrained by private sector standards.

He says his own departmental head is paid more than he is and that is still only a
20th of what a bank chief executive takes home.

He says the top public sector officials are not paid nearly as much as top company
executive but in many respects they do a more important job.

Opposition Leader MARK LATHAM has promised a Labor government would wind back the generous
federal politician superannuation scheme and also cut the super scheme of federal judges.
