Vic: Docklands goes back to the MCC

The Victorian Government says it will hand over responsibility for the Docklands area
to Melbourne City Council by 2008.

Two other councils have applied for control of part of the area, which is undergoing
a transformation from a disused industrial site to a yuppie playground.

But the government has decided to return the whole of Docklands to the MCC, who had
responsibility for the area before former Premier JEFF KENNETT took control of it.

Melbourne Mayor JOHN SO says he's delighted with the decision.

But the Mayor of Maribyrnong JOSEPH CUTRI is vowing to fight on for a slice of the Docklands.

Local Government Minister CANDY BROAD says Maribyrnong and Port Phillip councils will
still be consulted on development in areas affecting them.
