Fed: States likely to back Graeme Samuel as ACCC chief

SYDNEY, Dec 24 AAP - At least three state governments are likely to back Graeme Samuelas the new chief of Australia's competition watchdog, it was reported today.

Victoria formally nominated Mr Samuel - the prime choice of federal Treasurer PeterCostello - as the next chairman of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission(ACCC), The Australian said today.

Tasmania and Western Australia were expected to follow Victoria's move, it said.

NSW Pricing Tribunal chairman Tom Parry is likely to be backed by NSW and South Australiafor the ACCC position.

Mr Costello put on hold his support for Mr Samuel, who has worked with the NationalCompetition Council, after the states were furious he was nominated without consultation.

Queensland, the Northern Territory and the ACT still opposed Mr Samuel's takeover ofthe ACCC when Allan Fels retires in June, the newspaper said.
