WASHINGTON After six years of on-and-off debate, the House on Wednesday agreed that Congress should be subject to the same civil rights, fair labor and work safety laws that it imposes on private businesses.
``What's good for the private sector should also be good for us in Congress. We should bear the same burdens of the rules of employment as others,'' said New Hampshire Democrat Dick Swett, a chief sponsor.
Swett said the bill's adoption was ``a matter of simple fairness.''
The bill swept through the House on a 427-4 vote. The Senate must also act on the legislation for it to take effect.
